The Actual Hole in the Wall

Sushi Fussion gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “a hole in the wall.” Located on West 35th Street between 7th & 8th Avenue, this spot is guaranteed to be New York City’s best kept secret. Upon arrival, you may stop mid-sidewalk and scratch your head. Placed between Fuji Bakery & Madman Espresso is what appears to be a building service entrance. Yes, this is where the magical Sushi Fussion lays. There is usually a building manager in the doorway asking what you’re looking for — “sushi” and you will be directed up the stairwell on the right.

At the top of the landing, you may start to clutch your belongings a little tighter, but do not fret. You are in the right place. Back to the “hole in the wall reference” — once on the second floor, you’ll understand what I mean. Whether you are picking up an order you called in or placing an order in person, go to the hole in the wall hiden amongst the wallpapered menu.

As soon as you find the “hole,” you’re going to start questioning your decision but trust me, you’re doing the right thing. Sushi Fussion is a Kosher sushi bar located just south of the Garment District/off of Fashion Avenue so you’re guaranteed quality and freshness.

The only possible downside to this gem is that the food is to-go. For a food blogger that loves to take mouthwatering, plated pictures, this is less than ideal but when ordered, each roll is usually in its own container so it still has that yummy and pretty-looking sushi factor. Depending on the weather, you can carry it back to your desk or take a short walk to public seating areas and enjoy it al fresco (Herald Square by Macy’s, Bryant Park, One Penn Plaza).

If this place can’t get any better, it does. I occasionally forget to ask for extra spicy mayo on the side and when I do, I await an added charge to my bill, but Sushi Fussion throws it in for free.. with eel sauce. And the best part… the price! Special (gourmet status) Rolls range from $5.95-$11.95. But definitely call ahead so you don’t have to wait in the industrial-esque space!
